the recordings: migration, 2007 - 2012
This ongoing body of work was conceived over the past six years as I migrated from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest. The images, which were taken with film, are a way to analogically interpret the temporal nature of the contemporary view of "home" and place. The series also acts as a kind of love story. I find that wildness is a place in our hearts and that the landscape, especially the Oregon wilderness becomes a kind of metaphor for that place within ourselves.
Giving each image a circular format helps to blend them together and to speak of the circular nature of a life. This is my calendar, my home, the images, which recall a time when something happened or nothing happened at all, but there was a stillness. A silent and sudden change.
The full brightness or the diffused light of the sun constantly changes our view and shifts the focus of what we see around at us at any point in time. It reminds of flux and change. It keeps us in a state of wonder. I want to photograph the wonder of the everyday, to put the focus there and to see it again with new eyes.
